Wake Up

[3.5/5]

Monikers, an Orlando trio with deep roots in the punk community, are among a recent surge of bands combining Leatherface, Jawbreaker and the Gainesville, Florida, sound to create one of the scene’s more quickly growing movements. Where Monikers succeed the most on Wake Up is splicing in some of the catchy guitar hooks mixed with whiskey-induced vocals (“80 Proof,” “Mine”). At times, Monikers run the risk of blending in and becoming interchangeable with their peers; what saves them is Ryan Seagrist’s vocals. The former Discount guitarist’s lyrics and vocal delivery continually jump out, bringing the band’s Jawbreaker influence to the forefront in a completely enjoyable way. Wake Up’s songs may blend together, but it’s still a great record-and a perfect soundtrack for the drive down to this year’s Fest. (KISS OF DEATH) Ben Conoley
