Featuring members of Leftover Crack, Choking Victim and the Slackers, the charmingly named Star Fucking Hipsters are undoubtedly a side project. They’ve steered well clear of the dreaded “novelty band” tag, however, by producing an album chock-full of quality tunes (even if they do seem a tad confused about what sort of a band they want to be). Few groups would dare to follow a black-metal song (“The Path Is Paved”) with a ska-punk ditty (“Zombie Christ”). While their desire to mix genres is to be admired, the results are slightly messy. “9/11 Was (An Inside Joke)” will inevitably raise a few eyebrows, but this band are intent on stressing their anti-war (not to mention anti-racism, anti-sexism and anti-homophobia) message. The Hipsters’ convictions aren’t in question, and neither is their ability. Ultimately, they sound like they’re having fun and making a point in the process-and there’s nothing wrong with that.
