Turtle Nipple And The Toxic Shock

[2.5/5]
Where Heavy Heavy Low Low’s 2006 album, Everything’s Watched, Everyone’s Watching, was an ADD-addled spazz-metal faceplant, Turtle Nipple And The Toxic Shock finds the California quintet fixating on a single object-namely, SST Records’ back catalog. When they’re not aping Black Flag’s bent, electrocuted riffage, HHLL are covering Flag’s “Wasted” (subtitling it “Black Flag Cover” for the special-needs kids). When that inspiration runs out, they turn to Saccharine Trust’s spindly jazz-core (“Is This Your Homework?”) or Bl’ast’s Flag-infused psych metal (“R4TB3LLY”). There are certainly worse sources to pillage, sure-and in wasting nearly half the album on a closing “experimental” jerk session that rivals Greg Ginn’s most self-indulgent solo work, HHLL are glad to exploit those, too.
