The Motive For Movement

[4/5]

The Motive For Movement commences with the colossal “Faces,” a seemingly beefed-up Gang Of Four number with jagged, angular guitars and pointed socio-political musings. The song immediately makes clear the East Bay band aren’t afraid to inject different tones into their fiery hardcore punk, nor are they loath to state their admirable anti-apathy, pro-social progress viewpoints. Straight-up blistering hardcore like “The Reason I Breathe” and “Under The Sun” rub elbows with the ska-laced “Third World” (dealing with class inequity and the government’s view of people as expendable) and the rock ’n’ roll-tinged “Ambivalence.” The record gets doubly fierce toward the end; first, with the anti-Christianity “Terminus Mos Adveho” ending with, “There was no Jesus…‘God is dead,’ like Nietzsche said!” then the scorching closing track “Conquest Of Saints,” which is book-ended by a sadly sweet instrumental intro and a Joe Strummer soliloquy that brings the album full circle.
