Black Kids

Partie Traumatic

[3.5/5]

Remember that amidst the post-backlash backlash, Jacksonville, Florida’s Black Kids were only guilty of making a great EP that sounded a little like Robert Smith fronting Lipps Inc., and then giving it away online. If those four charming tracks generated an absurd amount of hype last year, then, hey, Reggie Youngblood & Co. needed to take their introverted indie disco to the next level. With production from former Suede axeman Bernard Butler, it’s happened. Singleworthy EP tunes like “Hurricane Jane” pack serious dance-floor punch, while the rocked-up “I Wanna Be Your Limousine” and “Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo)” hit hard from the start. The underwhelming title cut underscores the superiority of the first four Black Kids songs, but their transition from MySpace to major label is an overall success. (COLUMBIA) Dan LeRoy
