The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound

The Gaslight Anthem

The ’59 Sound

Imagine the end of summer when those whirlwind romances, jealous hearts and unbridled backseat desires face the untimely fate of blowing away with the changing leaves. Harvesting deeply entrenched emotions of love, loss, lust and looming change, modern punk mavericks the Gaslight Anthem know these notions all too well on their SideOneDummy debut, The ’59 Sound. The album’s title track which melts the restless nostalgia of passing on with optimistic guitar melodies is followed by “Old White Lincoln,” where a thoroughly danceable bass line hooks into the anticipation of holding close someone who has you absolutely smitten. Chiming in with backing vocals on “The Patient Ferris Wheel” is none other than the the Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Dicky Barrett, adding an oozing charm to this anthemic chorus. Brian Fallon’s soulful vocals create truly sultry ballads with “Even Cowgirls Get The Blues” and “Here’s Lookin’ At You, Kid,” harnessing both lust and heartache in a style best mined by Tom Petty. Fallon’s lyrics continue to harness the Americana ethos that are successfully married with a soulful punk sound as timeless as the sentiments that inspire him.
