Skeletal Lamping

[4/5]

With Skeletal Lamping, Of Montreal up the sex and drop the gloom of 2007’s Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?. Continuing the high-density electro-disco shimmy, Kevin Barnes & Co. throw even more unexpected turns and infectious melodies into their newest crop of oddball love/lust ditties. Barnes adopts a lothario persona, a sex phoenix rising from the ashes of Hissing Fauna’s self-deprecating protagonist, spitting lines like, “I want to make you come 200 times a day.” Of Montreal are bringing sex back with songs as catchy as an STD in the bathroom during a Justice concert. This is the funk of the future, a forward-looking dance-floor fever so hot it’s blinding. The jams only let up on "Touched Something’s Hollow," a gorgeously depressing ballad that is the only dour moment in this upbeat/offbeat record. Skeletal Lamping furthers the notion that Kevin Barnes is, in fact, the Prince of our generation. (POLYVINYL) Casey Boland
