Antony And The Johnsons

Another World EP

[2.5/5]

For as strange as he is (think of a twisted piano-bar player in a David Lynch film), Antony Hegarty certainly knows how to create a mood. After exploring a transgender life in past songs, his haunting voice calls for complete exodus over barely-there piano in the stunning title track that opens this five-song EP (and crossover preview for a 2009 full-length). The solemn warble and bare-bones arrangements of “Sing For Me” and “Crackagen” come and go with a tiptoe, leaving you wanting more (guess that’s the purpose here, in a way). Fans might be thrown by “Shake That Devil,” which builds to a gospel burner with sharp saxophone squawks. Overall, though, Another World is only for the devoted. (SECRETLY CANADIAN) JR Griffin
