Theo And The Skyscrapers

[3/5] Last we heard from former lead Lunachick Theo Kogan, she was ordering murders like cheap takeout as the voice of Chuck Manson’s girlfriend–er, the doll version anyway–in Live Freaky! Die Freaky! Fleshed out again, and fiery as ever, Theo shows there’s no denying her return to the rock forefront on Theo And The Skyscrapers. The results, however, are mixed. Theo is capable of electrifying familiar formulas to make them seem fresh again, and that’s why a track like “Lay ’Em Out” works, even though it borrows shamelessly from Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love.” Ultimately, much of her new band’s debut is a lot like the leather catsuit Theo rocks on its cover: tight, feline and clingy in all the right places. But a handful of these glossy licks suffer from a disconcerting lack of depth–as with her outfits, it’s too easy to tell when there’s nothing underneath.
