The Stories Are True

[4/5] In describing Time Again, the phrase “Rancid Redux” definitely seems like the easy way out: They’re on Hellcat Records; Lars Frederiksen has sung their praises; their frontman has a garbled, Tim Armstrong-like vocal delivery; and Armstrong himself sings on The Stories Are True’s title track. But that’s not just a lazy description; Time Again really do sound like Rancid–although, given their blistering, old-school-inspired style, it’s also clear they’re not looking to reinvent the wheel. Which is fine, as they offer up a solid debut album that’s at times unhinged hardcore punk (the delightfully feral opening couplet of “Junkies” and “Say Again”) and at others melody-driven and accessible, though always with an undeniable edge. Like their forebears, they’ve even included a ska-drenched tune–the superb finale, “Streetwalker”–but all similarities aside, Time Again’s spirited sound makes Stories a worthy addition to the modern punk pantheon.
