Dr. Dog

We All Belong

[4.5/5] To call Dr. Dog Beatlesesque is completely legitimate, but also does the Philadelphia group an irrevocable disservice. Unlike other Beatles-y bands (think Oasis or Jet), Dr. Dog actually sound like the Beatles, which means that We All Belong is full of unusual instrumentation, fascinating harmonies and out-there arrangements, the likes of which are rarely heard outside of classic-rock radio. And unlike their debut, Easy Beat, We All Belong is phenomenally consistent: The opening track, “Old News,” makes its queasy way alongside brimming brass, while the closing title track features “A Day In The Life”-style multi-part pianos. No wonder Cold War Kids covered the Dog’s “Die Die Die” recently: They must have realized Dr. Dog are one of the only other true indie rock bands on their artistic level. Just keep Yoko away, and we’ll be fine. (PARK THE VAN) Jeff Miller
