Troubled Hubble

Making Beds In A Burning House

[4] Troubled Hubble’s name, which combines astronomical intelligence with whimsical poetry, encapsulates their appeal. This Illinois-based quartet write clever commentary about everything from insects to cold, but their instrumental inspirations are less obscure. Propulsive percussion and choppy riffs guide these relentlessly upbeat songs to their melodic payoffs. Chris Otepka sings as if he were projecting punchlines to the back row of a dinner theater, but this trait transforms from annoying to endearing midway through the first track. Fans might not sing along with phrases such as “oceanic hydrophonic” no matter how clearly they’re enunciated, but they’ll still hum the hooks. (LOOKOUT!) Andrew Miller
