Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster

Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster

II

[4/5] For the majority of AP’s readership, most interest in this Birmingham, Alabama-based powerhouse likely lays in the fact that Maylene And The Sons Of Disaster feature ex-Underoath vocalist Dallas Taylor. It’s this very reason that many others will also write off the band before hearing them pluck a single note. Which camp is going to be more disappointed is a tough call as the only real link between Underoath and Maylene is scruffy facial hair, while hard-drinking denizens of sticky-floored watering holes will miss out on their sprightly kick at the Down, Corrosion Of Conformity and Raging Slab can. Aside from the occasional spate of double-kick and thrash, II is nothing but gristly, tobacco-stained Southern rock oozing with astounding, shit-kickin’ choruses (“Death Is An Alcoholic,” “Raised By The Tide”), propelled by a husky triple-guitar attack, an indomitable rebel swagger and hooks that’ll stick with you for days.
