Sounding A Mosaic

[4] A reggae act fronted by a white Canadian named Jay Malinowski invites abuse, but save the goofing for another bunch of would-be-irie Canucks. This Kingston, Ontario, trio craft a loving tribute to Jamaica on Sounding A Mosaic — a musical maple leaf as potent as ganja, with appropriately spare production from Bad Brains bassist Darryl Jenifer; and Malinowski has one of those high, scratchy tenors made to soar above such riddims. When the band lean rockwards, as on the album’s highlight, “Shelter,” you can’t help but imagine you’re hearing Sting’s reincarnation — albeit a little early.(SIDEONEDUMMY) Dan LeRoy
