Telepathe

Dance Mother

[2.5/5]

Oozing out of Brooklyn like a pulsing computer virus being ridden bronco-style by a Björk-esque singer, Telepathe are repetitive and droning, yet there’s something inexplicably charming about the indie-trance outfit. There’s nothing on Dance Mother that hasn’t been done already-and often better by the likes of Goldfrapp and, again, Björk. Still, “So Fine” and “Devil’s Trident” showcase Melissa Livaudais’ chirpy-yet-bleak vocals (how does she do that?) and Busy Gangnes’ ability to fit a loop perfectly around his partner. “Michael” sounds like the score to a film that hasn’t been made yet while “Trilogy” makes you feel like you’ve just entered a very creepy backstreet S&M club. Telepathe should be applauded for making a challenging record; though it frequently doesn’t hit the mark, there’s plenty for fans of minimalism to get excited about.
