husband&wife - Dark Dark Woods

husband&wife

Dark Dark Woods

Like an airplane soaring thousands of feet overhead, the music of Bloomington, Indiana’s husband&wife will initially enter your ears as humble and meek, but up close, their sound is astonishingly immense. Dark Dark Woods begins slowly, as “Comp Jam” lingers with a detailed, building instrumental that accumulates into a big climax once the verse hits. “Mulberry Squeezins” and “Thanks For Understanding” chime in later with the same formula. As elegantly layered as these songs are, they do not do much for diversifying Woods. Good thing there is “I Got Fat” to change the pace; with spirited xylophone and trumpet, this endearing indie-pop song tackles good intentions with the inability to get out of the rut you’ve been in. “Saddest Horns” ends Woods exactly as it suggests: just trombones, clarinets and a big, moping melody.
