[2] It might’ve looked good on paper: Heavy Trash is the summit meeting between two cool-rockin’ daddies, Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion) and Matt Verta-Ray (Speedball Baby), in the latter’s home studio. While it cannot be denied that these gentlemen’s parent bands have created many great albums that smell like sweat and burning shoe leather, listening to Heavy Trash is about as interesting as watching a wet refrigerator box dry at twilight. There’s none of that devil-got-me-by-the-gall-bladder madness Spencer and Verta-Ray are obviously capable of delivering; only trawls through Standard Rockabilly And Country Song Forms 101. It’s not that Heavy Trash is bad; it’s just patently ordinary, and there’s too much of that already. (YEP ROC)-Jason Pettigrew
