Cock Sparrer

Here We Stand

[3.5/5]

Cock Sparrer are a funny old band. They’ve been together (off and on) for 35 years or so, and yet Here We Stand is only their sixth studio release. The English East End bovver boys only record when they feel so inclined, tour when there’s no soccer on the telly and certainly avoid the punk cabaret (See Sham 69, the Business, etc.) circuit. Back in the ’80s, their misunderstood anthem “England Belongs To Me” led to the band being adopted by the right wing (the English Klan-a-likes known as the National Front), despite the band’s protests. For those in doubt, Cock Sparrer are not a racist band. Don’t let the skinheads fool you.

Here We Stand is actually a welcome return. Songs like “Spirit of ’76” and “Suicide Girls” display a fire and songwriting spark the band had been missing since the mid-’80s, and the musicianship is surprisingly immaculate. The classic lineup is pretty much still intact, so hopefully we won’t have to wait so long for the next album. (PIRATES PRESS) Brett Callwood
