Suicide Silence

No Time To Bleed

[3/5]

“Wake Up,” the first song on Suicide Silence’s new disc, features vocalist Mitch Lucker screaming the title phrase over and over again as forcefully as possible. They should have put it in the middle of the disc instead, to rouse listeners who might have otherwise dozed off. This is a 37-minute, nearly nonstop barrage of deathcore riffing, thunderous drums (the best thing about the album) and vocals that alternate between shrieks and growls. Interestingly, the most compelling track, “…And Then She Bled,” doesn’t feature Lucker at all; it’s a moody instrumental, reminiscent of Slipknot’s quieter moments, with what sounds like either horror-movie dialogue or a tape of a policeman talking to a domestic violence victim buried in the mix. The rest is noisy, high-speed abuse, good for a jolt of adrenaline (again, drummer Alex Lopez, formerly of the Funeral Pyre, is to be commended for his command of the kit) but not something likely to hold a listener’s attention over the long haul. Playing ferociously loud and relentlessly fast, Suicide Silence occasionally come off as a bit tedious, but there are enough peaks on this well-produced, admirably aggressive album to balance out the valleys.
