Sparklace

[4/5]

As the accomplished percussionist of Aloha and a touring member of CEX, Joan Of Arc and Love Of Everything, Cale Parks has established himself as the quintessential drummer for Polyvinyl’s polyrhythms. His solo releases, however, are built on ambient electronics and droning loops. A seamless combination of electronic sounds and instruments, “A Long Time In The Air” recalls the arrangements of Peter Gabriel’s early solo work. Most of the beats have enough groove to make you want to shake your rump, but the soothing melodies layered on top make the album more appropriate for a relaxing Sunday afternoon. “Some Sew, Some Find,” however, offers a fast tribal beat to pick up the pace. One could spend hours trying to wrap their head around Sparklace; it’s better to let the album speak for itself. (POLYVINYL; polyvinylrecords.com) Jesse Raub
