Sea Wolf - Old World Romance

Sea Wolf

Old World Romance

This review originally ran in AP 291.

Alex Brown Church has been eerily consistent in Sea Wolf. All three albums are 10 tracks long and each clocks in somewhere between 37 and 40 minutes. The songs are quiet indie-folk shuffles never shorter than three minutes and rarely more than four, with vague lyrics destined to be almost heard in the background of a CW drama or car commercial. Old World Romance is more of the same from Church, and while it’s enjoyable for what it is (his voice, sort of a broken tenor, has a certain je ne sais qoui to it that is soothing), you can’t help but wonder where all the songs went when after a half-hour or so, you recall literally nothing. Misunderstood genius or indie rock as insomnia cure? You be the judge.
