Druglords Of The Avenues - Sing Songs

Druglords Of The Avenues – Sing Songs

More than six years removed from the last Swingin' Utters studio effort, frontman Johnny Bonnel fills the void with a 12-track blast from the same old-school–punk past. Formed in 2004 as a side project, Druglords Of The Avenues took a backseat to Bonnel's other side project, the folk-punk Filthy Thieving Bastards, until recently. But the Druglords are worthy of first-order accommodations, offering a primer for classic four-on-the-floor frenzy. The guitars dial up '70s British punk power-chord barbed wire while Bonnel rolls over them with his gruff vocal treads, running his finger across the hooks until they draw blood. Though front-loaded, Sing Songs is a fine release, highlighted by the catchy, Clash-biting title anthem "Druglords Of The Avenues," quirky, lovelorn, punk-pop opener "Me Decided" and the terrific "He Loves," whose cadence and tone recalls the Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty In Pink."
