No Knocks EP

Writing catchy music that sticks can be a real task, but it’s one that Illinois pop-punk four-piece the Copyrights have mastered throughout the past decade since their humble beginnings. Now several albums in, the band are back with No Knocks, a three-song EP on Fat Wreck Chords, which could be the start of a beautiful relationship between the perfectly paired band and label. The EP's title track is the kind of song you can sing along to after only a couple of listens, a minute-and-a-half blast of solid pop-punk that has all of the right harmonies in all of the right places. “Keep The Change” is an even speedier number, with a galloped drumbeat and strangled guitar noise as a momentary transition between excited verse and chorus proclamation; all of this in 60 seconds. This quickly runs into the third and final track, “Don’t Want It,” which is all about noise and fury, the building climax right before the sing along chorus coming straight out of the post-hardcore churnings of John Reis’ late-‘90s tacklebox (think Drive Like Jehu). The Copyrights may be a proud, bouncy, fun pop-punk band, and bless them for it, but there’s potential for much more here, just like there was for bands like Jawbreaker and Rocket From The Crypt decades before them.
