Take Notice - The Get-Go

The Get-Go

There's something politely endearing about Take Notice's mandate on their debut EP, The Get-Go. This Michigan band are more eager than perhaps is healthy to tell their listeners that they're ultra-serious about this DIY punk-rock game, are "never looking back" and are ready to "get it right this time," including "spending all their savings" to get their band off the ground. Believe it or not, these are actual, paraphrased song lyrics. Now this would all be pretty embarrassing, perhaps a little shameful, and even a tad depressing, if the band didn't rock so hard.

Take Notice compare themselves to Kid Dynamite, which could have been grounds for an immediate write-off had they not delivered on that very proclamation. Sure, there's no Jason Shevchuk doing his demented-chipmunk vocal act (although baby-voiced singer Mike Duggan recently left the band and they are looking for a replacement), but fans of the Philadelphia melodic-hardcore institution that was Kid Dynamite, as well as those who dig other pop-punk purveyors like Dag Nasty and the Descendents, will find these four songs most pleasing. The tunes are fast, tight and catchy, including opener "And We Devised A Master Plan," an intro that clocks in at only 30 seconds. Thankfully, the three other songs are longer, and sing-alongs come fast and furious.
