Circa Survive

The Inuit Sessions

It’s hard to remember a time when Doylestown, Pennsylvania’s Circa Survive were better known primarily as ex-members of Saosin and This Day Forward. Such was the case when Equal Vision introduced the band with this limited (and now collectable) EP. On The Inuit Sessions, Circa Survive made loud and clear that they would be traveling in an entirely different direction from their alma maters. This brief debut demonstrates the band’s hallmarks: Anthony Green’s kaleidoscope vocal prowess; the unique guitar interplay of Colin Frangicetto and Brendan Ekstrom; the fluid-but-stone-solid fusion of bassist Nick Beard and drummer Steve Clifford. Circa have gained much notoriety for Green’s vocal gymnastics, yet his cohorts prove themselves equals in their respective roles.

“Act Appalled” and “The Great Golden Baby” appear on the band’s first full-length, Juturna. That leaves “Suspending Disbelief” and early live staple “Handshakes At Sunrise” as Inuit Sessions exclusives. The latter (featuring the original rhythm section of T.J. Dublois and Jon Gartland) deserved to graduate to Juturna: It rolls with symphonic swells and a chorus as rousing as anything the band would later produce. Rarely has a freshly hatched group so effortlessly wed disparate influences and conceived something so original.
