BrakesBrakesBrakes - Touchdown

Touchdown

Brakesbrakesbrakes are as eclectic (musically) and clever (lyrically) as ever on their third album, Touchdown. The British four-piece kick things off with the superb "Two Shocks," a restrained rocker with icy, new-wave vocals that gradually builds to a breathtakingly grandiose finale. The album then delves into alt-country ("Eternal Return"), folk ("Leaving England"), devastating, angular hardcore ("Red Rag") and even sunny, '60s-style pop ("Worry About It Later"). "Hey Hey" is jaunty rock 'n' roll with carefree lyrics ("It's a cartwheel day/Better grab it quick before it rolls away"), while "Oh! Forever" is a musically and lyrically minimalist number. The standout "Why Tell The Truth (When It's Easier To Lie)" is sad and sweet but still manages to stay upbeat with its lively chorus.
