Western Medicine - In Transit EP

Western Medicine

In Transit EP

Western Medicine vocalist/guitarist Adam MacKinnon bears an uncanny resemblance to a younger, more haunted Dave Grohl on tracks like “Let's Get Skeptical” and “Viking Funeral,” the latter of which opens WM's In Transit EP. But taking in the EP as a whole, it's clear that this debut from seasoned west coast vets (current/ex-members of Gatsbys American Dream/Waxwing, Ambitious Career Woman and Crimewave) is putting forth something more than just satisfactory Foo Fighters worship. Granted, there's also the title track, which could slide cleanly into that early part of the Foos’ catalog, but outside of that, Western Medicine manage to concoct a subtly diverse indie/alt-rock sound. Dinosaur Jr. gone dark piano balladry? Sure (“Neverender”). Light, tasteful psychedelic shades? Uh-huh (the six-and-a-half minute “Let's Get Skeptical”). If the band's promising material isn't enough, the unique insert for the CD version is a DIY fortune teller—a more direct bout of nostalgia that should bring certain listeners back to their grade school years. Western Medicine seem capable enough of moving this sound forward, though.
