While The City Sleeps, We Rule The Streets

Talk about a comeback: After the unfortunate failure of Midtown’s third album a few years back, singer Gabe Saporta dusted himself off, and ended up marrying his dance-pop hit “Bring It” to the much-buzzed about film Snakes On A Plane. But once you get past all the disposable cultural references of the movie surrounding the song, it cannot be denied that Saporta can craft one hell of a hook. Every single one of While The City Sleeps’ swaggering 11 tracks is immediately likeable and destined for total radio over-saturation. He piles on layers of synth-beats and angular guitars with slick production to propel you into a dancefloor frenzy, singing about “Spanish ass” and dropping some eye-rollingly clever lines like “G-A-B-E’s gonna get you hot!” And you know it’s a party when folks like Maja Ivarsson (the Sounds), William Beckett (The Academy Is…) and Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes) are onboard, rockin’ it like Axl Rose’s trademark snake dance. Saporta may be onto something when he titled one song, “Pop-Punk Is Sooooo ’05.” Because like his Panic-ky labelmates say, it’s “time to dance.”
