Robert Pattinson found a similarity between ‘Twilight’ and ‘The Batman’ roles

It’s hard to imagine that the Batman and Twilight franchises have anything in common, you know, apart from the brooding nature of their protagonists. However, Robert Pattinson has revealed one significant similarity that he’s found in his leading roles. Spoiler alert: It has nothing to do with the association between vampires and bats. 

Pattinson skyrocketed to global fame in 2008 with his portrayal of Edward Cullen in Twilight. Now, the actor is taking on a new blockbuster role as Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film, The Batman.

The 2019 announcement of his casting was met by a wave of criticism by franchise fans. Over 6,800 people went so far as to sign a petition urging Warner Brothers to reconsider. Others, including Jimmy Kimmel, jumped to his defense.

Pattinson has since proven that he can take the pressure in stride. In fact, he thrives on it.

In an interview with Total Film, the actor reveals that he enjoys the expectation that comes with an established fanbase. 

“There’s a slightly different feeling when you know loads and loads of people are going to watch something you’re working on,” he says, “I weirdly enjoyed it during Twilight, the idea that you can mess it up. I guess I felt confident. I wanted to be on the big stage.”

Not so surprisingly, that confidence is only perpetuated by putting on a superhero suit.

“I put it on. I remember saying to Matt [Reeves], ‘It does feel quite transformative,’” Pattinson states in another recent interview with Variety. “He was like, ‘I would hope it does! You’re literally in the Batsuit.’ You do feel very powerful immediately.”

Filming for The Batman resumed earlier this month following a two-week shutdown in response to Pattinson reportedly contracting coronavirus. Production is projected to wrap-up by the end of 2020 for a release date of Oct. 1, 2021.

The film is described as a “noir-driven detective movie” in which emphasis is placed on the Dark Knight’s crime-solving capabilities.

“He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been,” Reeves previously stated, “I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
