‘Russian Doll’ season 2 trailer finds characters delving deeper in time—watch

Russian Doll, a three-time Emmy-winning series, returns for a second season April 20. Ahead of the season 2 debut, Netflix has shared an official trailer.

Russian Doll follows two people, Nadia (Natasha Lyonne) and Alan (Charlie Barnett), as they repeat the same day over and over again, a la Groundhog Day. But when they meet each other and discover what’s happening, time itself shatters.

“Set four years after Nadia and Alan escaped mortality’s time loop together, season 2 of Russian Doll will continue to explore existential thematics through an often humorous and sci-fi lens,” an official synopsis reads. “Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations. At first, they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure, but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.”

The new season seems to follow the two as they try to understand why they’ve been thrown into the predicament. Could it be to sort out some unfinished business, or to simply enjoy the wild ride?

But it doesn’t seem as though Nadia is enjoying herself quite yet. At one point in the trailer, a bar patron calls her a time traveler. She replies, “I prefer the term ‘time prisoner.’”

Russian Doll returns with Lyonne as showrunner and executive producer.
