10 ‘SNL’ musician cameos that are totally hilarious

Saturday Night Live is an American television staple, satirizing everything from politics and current events, all the way to the appropriate amount of cowbell. (Just always assume you’ll need more of it.)

Every Saturday, SNL not only brings the humor, but they bring in some of the biggest musical acts in the world to perform their biggest hits. Sometimes these musicians get the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cameo in a comedy sketch with the actors. Check out a list of some of our favorite rock and alternative musicians who popped up in SNL skits below.

1. Chris Martin, COLDPLAY

Recurring Weekend Update characters Garth and Kat (Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig) love to share the desk with Seth Meyers to reveal their new holiday songs. On this segment, they brought on their backup singer Jan Pockabook (Chris Martin) to sing Thanksgiving tunes with them. These characters all improvise songs going off Armisen’s lead, and if their songs aren’t funny enough, you have to see their hair and matching vests.

2. Mick Jagger, THE ROLLING STONES

Have you ever wondered what rock legend Mick Jagger says to himself when he looks in the mirror? Look no further, because this SNL sketch shows you. Jimmy Fallon plays Mick Jagger’s reflection, and he absolutely nailed it down to Jagger’s famous moves.

3. Steven Tyler, AEROSMITH

This old-school SNL sketch features a young Jeff Goldblum, Chris Farley and David Spade as Karl, the video store worker. Steven Tyler sneaks in at the end for a perfect, hilarious cameo.

4. Harry Styles

Harry Styles has the amazing opportunity to perform “Sign Of The Times” and act in more than one sketch alongside that night’s host Jimmy Fallon. In one sketch, he is a Confederate soldier who gives the Union soldiers a bit of music advice. You can also catch Styles impersonating Mick Jagger with complete and creepy accuracy.

5. Lorde

This awkward sketch is comedy gold that is beyond tongue-in-cheek. The female SNL cast members were part of this sketch highlighting “A Day Without Women” and included the “Royals” singer herself. No spoilers: You have to see what happens for yourself.

6. Dave Grohl, FOO FIGHTERS

If you want to see Dave Grohl get back on drums and make a joke about his butt, you’ve come to the right place. Grohl, Ashton Kutcher, Fred Armisen and Bill Hader all channel their inner anarchical punk band in this smashing sketch. Grohl recounted his performances with Nirvana and Foo Fighters on the show and did a crazy spot-on Christopher Walken impression, too.

7. Jack White

Guitarist and vocalist Jack White pops into this SNL sketch with John Mulaney, Cecily Strong and Luke Null. He also brings his guitar and plays in real time as he crashes a wedding.

8. Green Day

Although this isn’t a typical sketch, Will Ferrell crashed the band’s performance of “East Jesus Nowhere” with a cowbell. How perfect is that?

9. Arcade Fire

Have you ever noticed that comedians and musicians sometimes give off similar vibes? In this sketch, Tina Fey tries to decide which person before her is a member of Arcade Fire and which person is a new SNL cast member. Even Lorne Michaels struggles.

10. Julian Casablancas, THE STROKES

Musical comedy trio the Lonely Island helmed by SNL cast member Andy Samberg share their funny videos on the show. They often feature popular singers such as Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, T-Pain and, in this case, the Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas. Just remember, “A boombox is not a toy!”
