SayWeCanFly lead off new album with raw, emotional single "The Space Between Our Eyes"—listen

SayWeCanFly’s Braden Barrie is once again baring his soul for the world to see. The Ontario native has had a consistent underground following since emerging on the scene in 2009.

But after the release of his third EP Darling and a successful stint on Warped Tour’s Acoustic Basement stage, both in 2015, SayWeCanFly is gaining more momentum than ever. In his newest album Blessed Are Those, Barrie pairs his bravely honest lyrics with carefully crafted melodies. When we asked him about the direction he took with this new album, this is what he had to say:

“This new SayWeCanFly album is a combination of the sounds I've explored over the last 7 years. I think I chose the words ‘Blessed Are Those’ because they are very inconclusive. I want everyone to find out how for themselves how that story begins and ends. I've always wanted to create an album that feels like the soundtrack to human life: the excitement, the pain, the realization of impermanence and the hope that keeps us going. I really hope everyone who listens can just feel that I was being honest with every moment on this record. The last year of my life has been one of the most confusing and difficult to navigate that I've ever experienced, and this album honestly saved me from drowning in that. It was my outlet for every terrible fear and anxiety, and my best attempt at emphasizing the triumphant moments. I'm very proud of this new record. I think I've gone back to the roots of SayWeCanFly and explored them deeper.”

The album’s first single, “The Space Between Our Eyes,” brings Barrie’s raw emotion to the forefront, accompanied only by an acoustic guitar and piano. “It feels good to release an acoustic single first. All of the songs on this record are based around vocals and acoustic guitar or piano, but I believe this is the only completely acoustic number. Kicking things off with something raw and simple feels right. This is one of the songs I wrote while on tour, and I think the essence of this one is really just about barely holding on. It's looking at yourself from a different perspective and trying to find the few things that make sense. I think it's a good way to intro the record, and I'm really excited for everyone to interpret this one for themselves.”
