Although Tom Holland is trading in his Spidey suit for army combat boots and a criminal record in Cherry, the film is still a Marvel reunion of sorts. The film, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, marks the first time the trio has worked together since Avengers: Endgame. However, MCU fans can expect to see Holland in a completely different light in this new film.

The film takes place in the Russo Brothers’ hometown of Cleveland, an area that has been hit hard by the opioid crisis. In a recent Q&A with Inverse, Joe Russo revealed that Cherry is a particularly important project for the brothers.

“It’s a very emotionally important movie for us. That part of the country has been designated ground zero for the opioid crisis,” Joe Russo said. “We’ve had a lot of people we were very close to die because of the crisis. We felt that it was a story that needed to be told and the luxury of coming off of movies like Infinity War and Endgame is that you can get complicated subject matter made in a difficult market for content like that.”

When it came time to find their leading man for Cherry, the Russo Brothers knew Holland was fit for the job.

“It’s a story about the opioid crisis that involves the Iraq war, PTSD, heroin addiction, Oxycontin addiction, bank robbing,” Anthony Russo said. “It’s a very intense film and Tom Holland is absolutely bringing it every day. We’re so impressed with his performance in this movie. It will be a very intense film.”

Now, fans are getting an official look at the upcoming film. The Cherry trailer shows a hardened Holland who is juggling the realities of falling in love, enlisting in the army and battling addiction. From fighting for his life in the frontlines of war to holding up banks with loaded guns, Holland’s character soon realizes he’s in situations where he already knows the outcomes.

Holland is joined on-screen by Ciara Bravo, Jack Reynor, Michael Rispoli and Forrest Goodluck among others. Cherry arrives in theaters on Feb. 26 and on Apple TV+ on Mar. 12.

Holland is currently filming Spider-Man 3 which is surrounded by a slew of rumors and speculation at the moment. At the forefront of speculation are the theories that both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are reprising their Peter Parker roles for the new film.

Both Sony and, more recently, Marvel have responded to these casting rumors. However, neither company has confirmed whether or not they are actually true. From major plot twists to the return of some familiar faces and leaked teasers, Spider-Man 3 is clearly shaping up to be quite the film.

Spider-Man 3 is set to arrive on Dec. 17, 2021.
