Senses Fail vocalist Buddy Nielsen shares the best Bernie Sanders meme yet

We don’t ever remember a time when Senses Fail founder Buddy Nielsen shied away from anything. And we know better than to think the outspoken frontman was going to start keeping it chill in an election year.

On the band’s Twitter account, Nielsen posted a meme in support of Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders. Sanders’ visage is superimposed to recreate the cover art of Let It Enfold You, Senses Fail 2004 debut album. The text on the meme alludes to a line from “Martini Kiss” with “Bern Out, Not Fade Away,” while the tweet tells fans that “We ride for Bernie Sanders. Let’s stop establishment Democrats from ruining our party. Vote tomorrow! Feel the bern.”

Nielsen has been a longtime supporter of the Vermont senator: A Facebook post from 2016 shows him proudly affixing a “Bernie 2016” bumper sticker to his car and he’s keeping his fire “Bern-ing” for November.

Nielsen is just one in a large group of rockers pledging their support to Bernie Sanders’ campaign. The breadth of supporters is quite large, with members of punk lifers (The Wonder Years, the Lawrence Arms, Every Time I Die, Jeff Rosenstock, Pears, Nightbirds), emo forebears (Nielsen, Max Bemis), metal bands (Power Trip, Serj Tankian) and alt-rock royalty (Jack White, Bon Iver, Vampire Weekend) united behind Sanders.  Even Ariana Grande has an opinion.

Of course, the Senses/Sanders meme got its inevitable share of trolls. What’s important is that artists are taking a stand to act as conduits for information. Fans can certainly dismiss such statements. They can also do the right thing and get the information they need from any side of the political spectrum. You always hear someone crediting an artist for “saving them” through a piece of music. But getting people to willingly activate for civic duty–especially in these troubled times–may very well save us all.
