Here’s how Set It Off, Issues’ Skyler Acord collab happened

Set It Off released their most recent album Midnight a couple of weeks ago. Before the LP dropped, the band have given glimpses of what it was like making the album with their “Midnight Thoughts” series.

Now, they’re teaming up with AP to bring you the fifth installment of the video series showing what it was like working with Issues bassist Skyler Acord.

After signing to Fearless Records last year, the band released their first single off the album, “Killer In The Mirror.” That song was only the beginning of what the group had in mind for the rest of the album as they contemplated what their lives had been like in the years following 2016’s Upside Down.

The band were aiming to return to their roots while expressing that even though they’re musicians, they’re just a normal group of guys who experience hard times.

“It’s harder to write happy songs because you don’t bottle happiness up,” frontman Cody Carson says. “I think that’s part of the reason why our last record wasn’t as effective ’cause there was way more happy songs. And that sucks to say.”

Drummer Maxx Danziger wants fans to know it’s OK if you aren’t happy a majority of the time.

“It really spoke to me in the sense that I hadn’t felt happy in a long time,” he explains. “And the chorus is [saying] it’s OK to feel that way. You know, you’re a human. You’re allowed to feel that.”

That thought among others is revealed in the most recent addition to the behind-the-scenes series where the band explain the meaning of “Happy All The Time,” as well as what it was like working with Acord after meeting him on the road.

“We met Sky honestly just playing shows,” guitarist Dan Clermont explains. “We started talking about music and nerding out about plagal cadence and sus fours. I think he was a little taken aback that we’re just as geeky as he is with that kind of stuff.”

Carson went on to explain how a lot of the people in the industry will suggest hanging out to catchup and then never do. However, when it came to Acord they actually ended up making writing together happen.

“He was out here in LA for a bit living here, and the timing worked out when we were writing for the record,” Clermont says. “Cody just hit him up to come in, and we wrote ‘Happy All The Time.’”
