‘Shrek’ franchise getting reboot from 'Despicable Me' producer

In an interview with Variety, Meledandri, who is also the founder of Illumination Entertainment, revealed his plans to revive the childhood classics.

Of course, everyone’s main concern is what he is going to do with our beloved ogre. However, Meledandri assures fans that a complete overhaul of the series is not in order. In fact, he feels nostalgic for the film and plans to keep it relatively on the original track.

Additionally, Meledandri hints that the original cast could be returning for the reboot.

“When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome,” Meledandri says. “And while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”

Additionally, Meledandri is currently working on an animated version of the famous Nintendo game, Super Mario Bros. The Super Mario Bros. movie is set to release in theaters by 2022.

The original Shrek franchise debuted May 2001. The franchise currently has four installments with two television specials, eight short films and one successful spin-off (Puss in Boots).
