Originally set for a July 8, 2016 release, Paramount Studios has pushed the film back to July 22, 2016 in order to secure an IMAX release. Sources tell Hollywood Reporter that with the original release date, the film would have competed for IMAX space with Warner's Tarzan, which opens July 1, 2016.

The third installment in the rebooted Star Trek series features returning stars Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin, with the new addition of Idris Elba.
