Mark Hamill on his 'Last Jedi' portrayal: "He's not my Luke Skywalker"

It looks like Star Wars actor Mark Hamill had some creative differences with director Rian Johnson over his latest portrayal of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In fact, Hamill says of the aged Jedi Master as presented in Episode VIII, “He's not my Luke Skywalker.” Watch the video below.

As reported by HuffPost, a recent interview with Hamill posted to YouTube shows the actor discussing aspects of Last Jedi's Skywalker that he doesn't particularly agree with. “This is the next generation of Star Wars,” Hamill admits—still, he says he had to “think of Luke as another character. Maybe he's Jake Skywalker; he's not my Luke Skywalker.”

Mild spoilers ahead: While the film shows Skywalker in hiding, Hamill says he doesn’t concur with Skywalker's reclusiveness. “I said to Rian, 'Jedis don't give up,'” he recalls. “I mean, even if he had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup. But if he made mistake, he would try and right that wrong. So, right there, we had a fundamental difference.”

In a similar interview, appended to the below video, Hamill says of the “new” Skywalker: “Who is this guy? How did the most optimistic, hopeful character in the galaxy turn into this hermit who says it's time for the Jedi to end? I read that and I said, 'What?' I mean, that's not what a Jedi does.”

While the actor confesses that he may prefer remembering the version of Luke Skywalker as presented in “the George Lucas Star Wars,” he concedes that “it's not my story anymore, it's somebody else's story. And Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective.”
