November 1, 2014 – Platinum selling musician Wayne Richard Wells, better known as Wayne Static, passed away at the age of 48. Wayne Static was the enigmatic former frontman and namesake of Static-X, who later forged a successful solo career. Wayne was scheduled to co-headline tours with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool over the next several months. No additional information is available at this time.
Static's friend Micah Electric, drummer of industrial band 9Electric, said on Facebook: “My friend Wayne Static has passed away. So glad to have known him, recorded with him, toured with him, partied with him and had MANY real conversations with him. He was a good soul who chose the wrong path. He will be missed.”
Wayne Static (born Wayne Richard Wells) founded Static-X in Los Angeles in 1994. The band would go on to release six studio albums—the platinum Wisconsin Death Trip (1999), the gold Machine (2001), Shadow Zone (2003), Start A War (2005), Cannibal (2007) and Cult Of Static (2009)—before cooling off in 2009. Static then released his debut solo album, Pighammer, in 2011.
Static would've kicked off his co-headlining tour with Powerman 5000 on November 6 in Waterloo, Iowa.
Static-X graced the cover of AP 157 in 2001. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
