Cub Country - Stretch That Skull Cover And Smile

Stretch That Skull Cover And Smile

Conceived in 1999 as a side project for then-Jets To Brazil bassist Jeremy Chatelain, Cub Country aren't quite the bedroom-AM-country-dream they once were; they're now a fully realized rock band in the spirit of Wilco and Beachwood Sparks. Stretch That Skull Cover And Smile is a solid record that succeeds in covering a lot of sonic ground within its 12 tracks-"Red Carpet" is a slow-building ballad that recalls Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone," while "After The Song's Been Sung" cribs from the grittiest of Neil Young's catalog. Recorded in a variety of homes and studios in four different cities, Stretch has an audibly earnest approach, developing character around minor sonic imperfections. Chatelain effortlessly anchors the proceedings through the album's haunting conclusion, "The Stars Drip Down."
