Sum 41 return with nostalgia-inducing pop-punk single "Landmines"
Sum 41 have plans to break up after they release their final album, Heaven x Hell, and while details on that record are still TBA, they did just release a new single called “Landmines.” The band have said that Heaven x Hell will be a two-part album with a nostalgic pop-punk sound on the Heaven half and a more metallic vibe on the Hell half, and if “Landmines” appears on the album, it’ll presumably be on the Heaven half. It sounds straight out of the band’s classic early 2000s pop-punk era, with a few modern twists.
“When I wrote ‘Landmines,’ I had no intention of writing an old-school ‘pop-punk’ song,” vocalist/guitarist Deryck Whibley says. “It just came out really quickly, and I knew right away that this song felt special to me.” It’s a song that longtime fans should find instantly satisfying, and you can hear it below. A video will premiere later today. It’s the band’s first release for Rise Records.

Sum 41 recently wrapped up a tour with the Offspring and Simple Plan, which included members of all three bands collaborating onstage during the Offspring’s “Why Don’t You Get A Job?” at the Jones Beach show in New York. They’ll play the When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas and a WWWY sideshow with Bowling For Soup and Plain White T’s this October.
Whibley, meanwhile, has been dealing with some health issues. He was recently hospitalized with pneumonia, and after being released from the hospital, he posted a statement in which he said, “Although I’m not out of the woods of this pneumonia yet and have been told to be prepared for a bit of roller coaster sickness over the next couple of weeks, I’m staying positive and doing my best to get through all of this. I’m still bed ridden, having a hard time breathing, tight chest pains and some pretty wild fever dreams, that I guess are keeping this whole thing somewhat entertaining. I’m in the best hands and am on the right medicine. I plan on being my absolute best for When We Were Young next month.”
