Bambi EP

On Bambi, Montreal quartet Suuns present a pair of tracks plugged into drum machines left over from 1980s U.K. clubs and overlapped with the mysterious and lethargic vocals used to great effect on Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs. !!! are another fitting reference point for Suuns, given the post-punk undertones and extended running time of Bambi’s title track. Tension builds as queasy synths and Ben Schemie’s reverb-drenched mumbling melt around a relentless four-on-the-floor kick drum. Even the perky, percolating guitar seems to give up and fall behind the beat toward the end of its melody. Although most elements feel distant, “Bambi” is hypnotically engaging and would probably sound amazing breaking 100 decibels on the dance floor. Suuns’ other offering, “Red Song,” is less successful. With its drudging tempo, it clocks in two minutes shorter than “Bambi” and feels three times as long. According to members of Suuns, these songs may reappear in shorter form on subsequent releases. Excellent news, since the completely decent Bambi could be a few edits away from greatness.
