Back in May, it was confirmed that Arquette is reprising his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley for Scream 5. Shortly following this, Cox also joined the cast for the upcoming film.

Rumors emerged in June that Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group were trying to get Neve Campbell on board for Scream 5. At the time, however, Campbell revealed that she was hesitant about the new Scream film and hadn’t signed on for it yet.

“I got this really, really respectful letter from the directors of the new one,” she said. “I had really thought that the only way I’d step into a new project with new directors is if they really wanted to honor him.”

Now, it has officially been confirmed that Campbell is reprising her role as Sidney Prescott in Scream 5. This will be the first Scream film since 2011 and the death of original director Wes Craven in 2015.

Scream 5 is being directed by the group Radio Silence in place of Craven. On Thursday, Radio Silence released a statement confirming the casting news.

“We’re pinching ourselves! It’s hard to express how much the character Sidney Prescott shaped our love of movies and to have the chance to work with Neve is truly a dream come true. It just wouldn’t be a Scream movie without Neve and we’re so excited and honored to join her in Woodsboro.”

As well, Campbell revealed why she decided to join Scream 5 following the passing of Craven.

“After spending time speaking with Radio Silence,” she says. “They have shown such love, respect and admiration for Wes Craven and all that he’s created in the Scream franchise. I am beyond excited to step back into the role of Sidney Prescott and return to Woodsboro.”

Since the announcement of Scream 5 last year, we have learned a few key details. Production is set to happen in Wilmington, North Carolina when filming is safe to resume amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Due to this delay, Paramount and Spyglass anticipate that Scream 5 will be released worldwide on Jan. 14, 2022.

Alongside the original cast members, Scream 5 includes some new actors to the franchise. Jack Quaid, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega are all confirmed for the new film. Ortega is best known for her roles in Jane The Virgin and Netflix‘s You.

Plot details are still unknown but the story is being co-written by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak are producing while longtime Scream mastermind Kevin Williamson is executive producing. Chad Villella is also executive producing.
