ALX explores the duality of good and evil in “Right Guy”–watch

Pop singer ALX has released a new music video for his latest single, “Right Guy.” The song is the first track to be released off his forthcoming EP, Yes, which is expected to drop this summer. “Right Guy” was written and produced by Simonsaid, Adam Novodor, D-Work and ALX, and the track was released via Alamo Records.

On his latest release and first of 2021, “Right Guy” oozes with the perfect culmination of alternative, pop and hip-hop elements. From the instantly stuck-in-your-head chorus to the cheeky visuals, “Right Guy” serves as ALX’s most fully realized track to date—and that’s saying a lot for the pop sensation who has garnered a massive fanbase seemingly overnight.

The new video features the artist in a variety of costumes competing against himself for the affection of a young woman and weighing the consequences of being a good guy or a bad guy. Creating a metaphorical scenario that could leave him as either version of himself, “Right Guy” poses the age-old question of who to be when courting a new relationship.

Like most of ALX’s releases, there’s a certain theme of passion and creativity incorporated into the video. The visual, directed by Neal Farmer, begins with ALX standing outside contemplating two versions of himself, one dressed in all black and the other in all white. A woman walks past both versions of the singer, and they dramatically ogle her while the lyrics, “Is he the right guy?” overlay the scene.

The rest of the visual shifts between the artist playing with a band in a garage and singing through a megaphone to scenes of him recognizing the split between the good and bad within himself and what form the relationship could manifest based on who he decides to be. The duality and contemplation of the lyrics matches the content of the video, with the artist asking himself what type of person he wants to be in a relationship.

Throughout the song, ALX asks the question of how he can appropriately be the guy between “too good and too bad” for someone. His vocal range shines in this catchy plea while his lyrics shamelessly show off the thought process involved in approaching a romantic interest. While he could choose to be a nice guy, it doesn’t seem like it’s worked out so well for him in the past. Despite this situation, ALX ultimately decides to be the better man, even if the outcome will be the same in the end.

More on ALX

Alex Fike, known professionally as ALX, has only recently started his music career. Similar to his older brother Dominic Fike, ALX has gained a large following relatively quickly. The Florida-based pop artist has a relatively small discography, but that hasn’t stopped him from garnering a dedicated fanbase. The video for “Right Guy” is the latest single since ALX’s 2020 EP The Fantasy, which featured the mellow yet passionate single “Love On Top,” the video for which has amassed over 1 million views on YouTube.

ALX “Right Guy” lyrics

(You have one new message)
Is he the right guy?
Is he the right, yes
Is he the right, the right guy? Oh
If you’ve ever been a side piece
Please put your hands up
Hit me on my phone, up up up
I’ll know when you stop
I need you to please stop and tell me right here
Oh, I just hope you’re sure
He’s the right guy, your side piece
The wise-ass, I’ll be there
Some between too good and too bad for ya
Look at Mr. Right, baby I’m just lookin’ out for ya
But I guess the right guy don’t like you
And I like that, nun but me
Too soon and not sad for ya
Look for Mr. Right, baby how’s that workin’ out for ya?
Somethin’ that you need to rethink, uh
Heard it all before and I’m the one you should lean on
I’m still by your side
You gotta make up your mind
Somebody obviously doesn’t wanna see it through
You keep wishin’ for the right one
He’s sitting right in front of you
Still by your side, I know you’ll pick
The right guy, your side piece
The wise-ass, I’ll be there
Some between too good and too bad for ya
Look at Mr. Right, baby I’m just lookin’ out for ya
But I guess the right guy don’t like you
And I like that, nun but me
Too soon and not sad for ya
Look for Mr. Right, baby how’s that workin’ out for ya?
Is he the right guy?
Is he the right
Is he the right, the right guy? Oh
(Pretty good, not gonna lie)
