In the past 18 years, she’s done a lot professionally, as well as had quite a tumultuous personal life. And she’s still here, making music and, just last year, embarking on her first North American tour in five years.

Avril Lavigne’s impact on the music scene has been felt for decades. With six albums to her name, the vocalist is still inspiring a whole new generation of artists.
At the start of social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic, many musicians were finding new ways to connect with their audience. Machine Gun Kelly took his free time and channeled it into what he called the Lockdown Sessions. Over several weeks, he shared covers and freestyles featuring Paramore (“Misery Business”), PVRIS (“In These Walls”), Rihanna (as requested by Marilyn Manson) and more.
Early on in the sessions, the musician/actor took on Lavigne’s “Sk8er Boi.” Short and sweet, MGK played through the 2000s staple’s iconic riff.

The cover wasn’t too surprising as MGK and Lavigne recently crossed paths pre-pandemic as he joined We The King’s frontman Travis Clark in the studio.
Clark, who met Lavigne at a Super Bowl party through Ryan Cabrera, helped the singer write the title track on her latest release, Head Above Water. MGK and the WTK frontman built a bond while on Warped Tour, and Lavigne noticed their friendship.
“[With Avril], she was like, ‘Hey, I see that you post pictures with your buddy Machine Gun Kelly. Do you think you would want to write?,’” Clark tells Alternative Press. “And I was like, ‘Yeah!’ So I texted him. I was like, ‘Yo, you want to work on a couple [of] songs with me and Avril for her record?’ And he said, ‘Absolutely.’ So that all parlayed and ended up snowballing into each other. I end up in really cool sessions that I just never thought I would ever really be a part of.”
