Capcom finally announces official remake of 'Resident Evil 2'

1998's Resident Evil 2 is widely regarded as a fan-favorite entry in the survival horror video game franchise and fans have longed for a remake for quite some time, especially after 2002 when Capcom released an excellent remake of the first Resident Evil game for Nintendo's Gamecube. Within the last couple of weeks, rumors and speculation have been brewing due to exciting activity on the Resident Evil and Capcom social networks, with an R&D Division 1 producer even asking for direct feedback from fans on Facebook in regards to an RE2 remake.

Hello Resident Evil fans! This is Capcom R&D Division 1!

First off, we would like to express our deepest appreciation to all Resident Evil fans, for your passion, enthusiasm and continued support for the Resident Evil brand.

Enthusiasm for a Resident Evil 2 Remake is something we've been hearing from you over the years, and has drawn some recent attention in the media.

However, as the team owns the RE brand, we're not certain how we feel about this approach, and would like to ask your honest and frank opinion about the “Resident Evil 2 Remake” and what the brand identity is supposed to be about?

Today, Capcom has finally announced that a Resident Evil 2 remake has been given the green light to begin development. In an announcement video, which you can view below, Capcom R&D Division 1 producer “H” says that they will do their best to heed fan feedback and deliver the best possible gameplay experience with this new version of RE2. Maybe the overwhelming hype behind the recently announced Final Fantasy VII remake finally got Capcom to get the gears moving on this.

“H” goes on to explain in the video that “it will be some time before we can bring you an update on this project,” as should be expected when completely remaking a game, as opposed to just releasing an HD remaster.
