Carrie Fisher, known for her portrayal of Princess Leia in the Star Wars series, has died at the age of 60.

Fisher suffered a heart attack on Dec. 23 on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

Her death was confirmed in a statement made to People by Fisher family spokesman Simon Hall, “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother, Carrie Fisher, passed away at 8:55 this morning.”

Fisher was only 19 when she auditioned for a New Hope, and didn't believe that it was going to become the big phenomenon that it is today.

In an interview with Short and Sweet NYC, she remarked “I thought I would like it but I didn’t think I’d have that many people that would agree with me.”

Fisher was also a writer who wrote over 10 books and screenplays. Her most recent work was a memoir, The Princess Diarist which was released on Nov. 22.

Mark Hamill, who starred aside her in the Star Wars series, has already taken to Twitter with his reaction.

Other celebrities have also reacted including William Shatner, Stephen Fry and Larry King.

Fisher is survived by her mother Debbie Reynolds, her daughter Billie Lourde, her sisters Tricia and Joely along with her brother Todd. She is also survived by her service dog Gary, who she took with her everywhere.
