Volumes address passing of former guitarist Diego Farias

Earlier today, news broke that former Volumes guitarist Diego Farias passed away at the age of 27. The information was first shared by his brother and fellow former bandmate Gus Farias.

Now, Volumes have confirmed the news and shared their own statement on the musician’s passing.

“We are absolutely devastated by the tragic passing of Diego Farias. We are trying to cope and process this as it all seems so surreal. We send our love and thoughts to his brothers Gus and Andres, his mother and father, and his entire extended family.

“As we collect our thoughts, we will then be able to properly convey them more, but for now…we love you Diego, rest in power. –Volumes”

AltPress reached out to members of the scene to share their memories of Diego. The band had played Warped Tour throughout the years including 2013, 2014 and 2016, and founder Kevin Lyman recalled interacting with Diego on the road.

“I had Volumes on tour many times and got to know them pretty well,” Lyman says. “Diego and myself butted heads a few times, but always found some common ground. We are losing too many, too soon.”

The Word Alive frontman Telle Smith also crossed paths with Diego, having recruited Volumes as support in 2016.

“One of my favorite things about Diego was his overall demeanor,” Smith begins. “95% of his entire life as I’ve known it, he was constantly smiling or laughing. At times when Volumes were having an issue with something—which every band does—he would just come and sit down, drink a beer and put his arm around you and be like, ‘Well, nothing for me to do!’

“Every situation that was happening, he was always calm and collected and didn’t make little things a big deal. And I think that’s a gift that not a lot of people have. He’s gone entirely way too soon, and he left a huge impact. There’s not a guitarist or a band person who has toured with him that hasn’t realized he was one of the best guitar players we’d ever tour with.”

Ice Nine Kills also toured with Volumes a handful of times, including a 2014 run where both bands supported Crown The Empire

“We had the pleasure of touring with Diego and Volumes on a few occasions and they were always super humble and nice to us,” INK frontman Spencer Charnas says. “Diego stood out in our scene as an incredible musician and producer that had such a bright future ahead of him. His death is beyond tragic, but it’s comforting to know that his art will live forever. Much love to his family and friends at this incomprehensible time.”

Our thoughts are with all of Diego’s family and friends at this time.

More on Diego Farias and Volumes

As a founding member of Volumes, Diego had been with the band since they began in 2009. Diego left the band less than a week ago, shortly after his brother Gus, as the band detailed in a lengthy statement on Jan. 31.

Various others have also tweeted in remembrance. Many of which are from those who have shared time with Diego either on tour or in some other way. One includes former Woe, Is Me vocalist Hance Alligood.

Attila frontman Fronz shared memories of Diego, writing, “@PRODBYYAYGO
was a genuinely good soul. My favorite memory was when I stayed at his house for 4 days to record new Bone Crew. He was very adamant about getting in shape and being healthier so he would make me run 4 miles with him through LA every day. ??”

Volumes released a statement regarding their recent member changes last week, explaining Gus and Diego are no longer in the band and vocalist Michael Barr has returned.

“As many of you are now aware, Gus and Diego Farias are no longer with Volumes, and Michael Barr is now back with us in full force. We want to give you one statement to answer some of your questions and set the record straight, so here it is.”

They continue by explaining that Diego wasn’t fired or kicked out of the band. From his growing work as a producer, he simply “lost the desire to tour” and couldn’t commit his time to write with them anymore.

With Barr back on vocals, Volumes are currently on tour with Crown The Empire in Southeast Asia, which kicked off Jan. 25. Prior to this run, the band played Rock USA with both Diego and Gus. You can see a video of that below.

The band are set to join Born Of Osiris for a U.K./Europe run in March before returning to the U.S. for the Vengeance tour with Attila.
