Earthquake with 6.4 magnitude hits California, artists share experience

This morning, Southern California was hit with reports of an earthquake about 150 miles from Los Angeles. Now, the US Geological Survey reports an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 rattled the area early Thursday morning.

So far, at least four aftershocks have been recorded, measuring with a magnitude of 4.7, 3.5, 3.8 and 4.2.

The quake hit at 10:33 a.m. and was centered in Searles Valley. However, reports state it could be felt in Los Angeles.

The LA Times reveals Los Angeles officials have gotten no reports of any major damage. However, emergency agencies have been flooded with calls since the event. As a result, officials are urging people to only use 911 for emergencies.

“We are very much aware of the significant earthquake that just occurred in Southern California. Please DO NOT call 9-1-1 unless there are injuries or other dangerous conditions. Don’t call for questions please,” the LAPD said in a statement.

According to reports, buildings shook for around 30 seconds.

Consequently, Diane Ruggiero, general manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites Ridgecrest in Ridgecrest, tells CNN that the hotel suffered some significant damage.

Five minutes following the quake she revealed, “The chandeliers are still swinging. The floor rippled.”

The Los Angeles International Airport took to Twitter to state no damage was reported with operations to remain normal.

But, according to earthquake expert Dr. Lucy Jones, residents should still expect more aftershocks.
