Harley Quinn outfit in 'Birds Of Prey' is "less male gaze-y," Margot Robbie says

It looks like Harley Quinn‘s outfit will be getting a makeover in the new Birds Of Prey film. The female-led team behind the movie gave us our first glimpse at the new look in the first teaser trailer in which Robbie dons a pink sports bra, suspenders and a sequined blazer.

In a recent Vogue cover story, the writer describes the new outfit as “more Sporty Spice than male fantasy,” a makeover that was definitely intentional.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re well aware of Quinn’s 2016 Suicide Squad outfit, which also became one of the most popular Halloween costumes that year.

But if you’re looking to see Quinn in her red-blue shorts and “Daddy’s Lil Monster” shirt in the forthcoming flick, you better brace yourself. Quinn is getting a makeover in Birds Of Prey.

Vogue dropped by the set of the film, stopping in the wardrobe trailer so Robbie could try on the next day’s costume—a sequined blazer, sports bra, and orange track shorts.

“That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer,” says Erin Benach, the film’s costume designer.

“Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y,” Robbie adds.

Aside from Robbie, the cast includes Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), Victor Zsasz (Chris Messina) and Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).

The synopsis for the Suicide Squad spinoff reads, “After splitting up with The Joker, Harley Quinn and three other female superheroes—Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya—come together to save the life of a little girl (Cassandra Cain) from an evil crime lord.”

Birds Of Prey is slated to hit theaters Feb. 7, 2020.
